From commodities research to global markets

6:05 Markets was founded in April 2026 by Abraham Went and James Sahota. We wanted to build an independent, student-led research organisation: one where analysts could take responsibility for their work, develop their own market views and publish research for an audience beyond campus.

We did not build it alone. Researchers we had worked alongside chose to join us, bringing their experience, ideas and commitment to the new organisation. They helped establish our first teams and publications, turning a decision made by two founders into a collective effort. Their contribution remains an important part of what 6:05 is today.

Building beyond commodities

Our background in commodities gave us a starting point, but our ambitions extended beyond a single area of the market. We wanted to study both individual sectors and the wider economic forces affecting them.

That meant building coverage across foreign exchange, fixed income, policy and cross-asset strategy alongside our work in energy, agriculture, metals and logistics. Our aim was not simply to cover more subjects, but to bring different perspectives into the same research organisation.

The questions we want to answer often cross those boundaries: how an energy disruption changes an inflation outlook, how policy affects a supply chain, or how a shift in currencies changes the economics of trade. We want our research to follow those connections rather than stop at the edge of a team’s coverage.

Building an organisation around the research

As our coverage expanded, so did the work required to support it. We established analyst responsibilities, editorial standards and publication processes, alongside the website and report infrastructure needed to bring our research to readers.

Today, our research teams are supported by students working across editorial, operations, recruitment, marketing and industry engagement. This is a collective effort: producing the research matters, but so does reviewing it, publishing it and helping the next group of analysts develop.

We have also begun developing relationships with professionals across energy, trading and financial markets. Our aim is to bring practical experience into the organisation, give members opportunities to ask better questions and connect their research with the markets they study.

6:05 continues to develop, but the purpose remains straightforward: give students the responsibility and support to produce thoughtful, evidence-led market research, and build an organisation capable of sustaining that work.
